A Drowning

Here’s another find from the Welsh Newspaper archive – this sad and puzzling record appeared in The Llangollen Advertiser, Denbighshire, Merionethshire and North Wales Journal, 22 September 1871.

The Mr Freer in question must be my great-great grandfather, William Freer, but I have been unable to work out who the child might have been. To the best of my knowledge, and Paul’s, too, William did not have any children who pre-deceased him. William moved to Ruabon in around 1860 to work for the hunt but all his children are accounted for.

Searches related to his grandchildren and nieces/nephews have likewise drawn a blank. The unhappy event, which must have cast a shadow over the family, therefore remains a mystery.

Hanna Appleyard (née Nan Morris) is the granddaughter of Gladys Blacknell. Hanna has been very active in researching her family history especially along the Freer line.
