Dating my favourite photograph

Over the years, I’ve collected many photographs from the older of my relatives. I’ve always borrowed them, scanned them as high a resolution as I can and then returned them. The most frustrating aspect though is not knowing who is in them nor when/where it was taken. This one is no exception – though it is my favourite by a long shot. And given time, it’s coming together.

Mysterious Freer baptism leads to new cousins in Australia

I came across a complete index of Freer baptisms in Quorndon, Leicestershire in my quest to find more about William’s parents and siblings. Little did I know it would lead me to discover two new Australian 4th cousins descended from a Freer who emigrated there in 1852.

When was William Freer born?

I’ve been tracing as much as I can about my great great grandfather since I started my research around thirty years ago. William Freer was listed on his daughter Clara’s birth certificate in 1869 as a dog feeder of all things. Of course, it doesn’t tell you much about his age and so a process of digging up old records, guess work and deduction began.

On the hunt for Quorndon kennels

My great great grandfather, William Freer, was a kennel man in the Leicestershire village of Quorndon in the 1850’s.

He was born in Quorndon in 1830 and likely stayed there, until marrying, with his parents who, in 1841, were living in Barrow Gate (now Station Road).

Where is the Blacknell family from?

In 1891 there were 54 Blacknell families living in London. This was about 26% of all the recorded Blacknell’s in the UK. London had the highest population of Blacknell families in 1891.

Nottinghamshire had the highest number of families as a proportion of its population.

Judy – second cousin

Hi Paul,

I came across your Blacknell history recently, and have been overjoyed by the find.

My maiden name was Blacknell. I was born in St Asaph 1962. My father is Ronald Blacknell, my grandparents were Frank and Freda Blacknell. I have an older brother Philip Blacknell, born 1959.

I’d be happy for you to get in touch if I can be of any help.

Paws for thought

I’m Paul’s second cousin and we share Frederick Blacknell and Clara Freer as our great-grandparents. I took up family history research earlier this year and have been amazed at what there is out there to find.
