34. (Research):Joseph's death certificate has the surname Blackner. However, the date is 4 days before the funeral of Joseph and his age at 80 (1783-84) years ties in with his christening if not yet his birth. Quite what he was doing in a work house needs further investigation, especially as his wife Elizabeth was still alive. Joseph Blacknell's recorded age in 1841 census was 60. However, with the 5 years rounding down rule this could mean 1775-1781. Other entries on that page however, show ages like 24,58, 31 - so it might be the recorder didn't follow the 1841 census rules. So aged exactly 60 would mean he was born 1780-1781. If he was indeed born 1780 then he would have been 84 at death, not 80, if this certificate is for the same Joseph. Joseph Blackner Joseph Blacknell Joseph's age in 1851 census recorded as 57 (1793-94); [Note Record]; Attached To Joseph BLACKNALL b. 1784 d. 23 Mar 1864

147. (Research):John Elliott's daughter Mary Ann's marriage was in 1849 (John Elliott was listed as father, but not noted as deceased) and his wife Sarah was a widow in in the March 1851 census. If alive at the wedding then John Elliott died between 4 Dec 1849 and 30 Mar 1851. However, it is also a possibility that he was deceased which could explain why he wasn't a witness (Elizabeth Tomlinson taking his place). There is a John Elliott RIN 1187 death Q4/1850 in Leicester. However, the index says he died age 73 (born 1777) making him a lot older than Sarah (35 years older). Certificate proves this is not our John Elliott. The death certificate for John Elliott 1846 shows he was around the correct age (4 years older than Sarah) and critically living in White Street. This is the same street as Sarah lived as a widow in 1851 and his daughter in 1849. The death informant was Louisa Johnson on Burgess Street - this street is adjacent to White Street, so likely a family friend. It's obviously an open question why Louisa was present at the death when Sarah could have done so. His daughters Mary Ann & Maria were approx 15 years old at the time. White Street has been difficult to track down as it no longer exists. See Map 1892 Leicester Chas E Goad Insurance Plan of Leicester sheet 20 which does show it. In 1841, John Elliott was living in White Street but not with his family. This ties in with Sarah being in prison awaiting trial for larceny and also their children, Mary Ann and Maria, being sent to live with their grandfather William Tomlinson in Thurlaston. The Mrs Johnson who gave a favourable character statement at Sarah's larceny trial in 1841 could well be the same as Louisa Johnson who was present at John Elliott's death in 1846.; [Note Record]; Attached To John ELLIOTT b. 1807 d. 23 Jun 1846

Therefore born 23 Jan 1830 - 22 Jan 1831 1851 census shows age 20 therefore born 31 Mar1830 - 30 Mar 1831 Conclusion is she was born 31 Mar 1830 - 22 Jan 1831; more likely year is 1830 There is a Mary Elliott (not Mary Ann) baptised 26 Oct 1829 in Normanton on Soar (25 miles away from Thurlaston); [Note Record]; Attached To Mary Ann ELLIOTT b. 1830 d. 22 Jan 1913

153. The Freer family in Ruabon ended at 14 children in all, and during this time at least two of the daughters were sent to live with their maternal grandmother Sarah Moseby in Nottingham. Sarah had been widowed in about 1850 and remarried John Moseby. Mary Ann was the first - at 17, she was living with the Mosebys during the 1871 census employed as a machinist. Ten years later, Lucy was living with them aged 24, working as a seamstress. It is our strong suspicion that Clara was also dispatched to live with Sarah in the late 1880's and this is how she came to meet Frederick Blacknell (born Calverton) in around 1890.; Attached To Mary Ann ELLIOTT b. 1830 d. 22 Jan 1913, Other Event; Clara FREER b. 3 Sep 1869 d. 17 Mar 1918, Other Event; Lucy FREER b. 4 May 1857 d. 1910, Other Event; Mary Ann FREER b. 24 Sep 1867 d. 23 Sep 1949, Other Event; Sarah TOMLINSON b. 23 Mar 1812 d. 1898, Other Event

200. (Research):1861 Census - Mary Jane listed as 1 year old on 7/4/1861 so born between 4/1859 & 4/1860 (more likely 1859). However, elder sister Helen born 6/1859 which is within the window so they could be twin sisters. If not twins then Mary Jane should be born more than 9 months after Helen which is 3/1860 which is again inside the window. Both Helen & May Jane listed as 1 year old on the census, but Helen would be 1 year 10 months and Mary Jane 1 year 1 month. Looks like an enumeration error. Mary Jane Freer born Dec atr 1853 to mother maiden name Elliott. The ordering on the census is correct by age and this would make her 7 in 1861 census. Perhaps the 1 is actually a 7 (very poorly written). This also explains the uncharacteristically large gap between her mother's pregnancies! 1871 census - Mary Jane Freer living with John & Sarah Moseby (granddaughter to John Moseby) aged 17 born Quorndon, Leics. John was born Wakefield. Sarah born Leics. No other candidate Mary Jane Freer born Leicestershire 5 years either side of 1855 (other than in 1861) Death of Mary Jane Hatherley in 1926 (from burial) contradicted by GRO index age 71 (should be 73); [Note Record]; Attached To Mary Jane FREER b. 16 Oct 1853 d. 1926

215. (Research):Baptism of William Freer (parents John and Frances) 12 Sep 1830 shows he must have been born before 12 Sep 1830. Baptisms were often several months after birth in those days (unless the baby was very poorly). Gravestone shows age 56 at death - therefore born 18 Feb 1830 - 12 Sep 1830 1841 census (6 June) shows age 10 therefore born after 6 Jun 1830 - narrows the range to born 7 Jun 1830 - 12 Sep 1830. 1841 enumerators were to round ages down to nearest 5 years for those over 15. William and his siblings listed as 13, 10, 6, 4 & 2 years old, so he was following the rules and 10 is not an obvious error. 1851 census (30 March) shows age 20 therefore born 31 Mar 1830 - consistent with 1841 dates 1861 census (7 April) shows age 30 there born after 7 Apr 1830 - consistent with 1851 dates 1871 census (2 April) shows age 40 which doesn't contradict 1881 census (3 April) shows age 50 which doesn't contradict Marriage 4 Dec 1849 shows full age (21) - therefore born before 5 Dec 1828. Obviously a contradiction and somewhat believable because Mary Ann stated she was "under". Why would William lie? Maybe his parents didn't consent. Death age was stated as 51 which is clearly wrong (he was 56). His daughter Helen, who then lived in London, was present at the death and was the informant. It's possible she didn't know his age and/or Mary Ann was not in a state to advise. Current conclusion is William was born between 7 Jun 1830 and 12 Sep 1830; [Note Record]; Attached To William FREER b. 18 Jun 1830 d. 17 Feb 1887

Mary was listed by Tom as staying with them (in Quorndon) in 1871 aged 6 but her parents also listed her aged 4 as being at home that night in Mountsorrel (2 miles from Quorndon). The only Mary Hackney born 1864-67 in the region is Mary J. born 1867. The most likely conclusion is Tom's confusion as to which night she stayed with him and also as to her age. Perhaps Sarah and John Moseby never actually married (explaining no marriage records found) and so was recorded by her prior name. Sarah Moseby in 1871 aged 58 (born 1812-13) is grandmother to Mary Jane Freer Sarah Moseby in 1881 aged 68 (born 1812-13) is grandmother to Lucy Freer In 1891, John Moseby appears to have been married to another Sarah (born 1824) 12 years younger than our Sarah. No Sarah Moseby's died between 1880 and 1900 (we know our Sarah was alive 1881). In 1901, a Sarah Moseby died in Nottingham aged 71 (born 1829) too young to be our Sarah (born 1812) Sarah Tomlinson born 1812 to William & Jane Tomlinson is our Sarah. Sarah Tomlinson born 1823 to The Mrs Johnson who gave a favourable character statement at Sarah's larceny trial in 1841 could well be the same as Louisa Johnson who was present at John Elliott's death in 1846.; [Note Record]; Attached To Sarah TOMLINSON b. 23 Mar 1812 d. 1898

When challenged she admitted the theft and offered to pay. 369. Sarah Elliott was arrested for stealing 2 pieces of ribbon from a shop in Leicester on 19 May 1841. She was accompanied by a another young woman and tried to hide them in her umbrella. When the shop owner accosted her, she offered to pay but this was obviously declined and the police called. Assuming she was held in jail until her trial on 28 June 1841, this explains why she was missing from the 1841 census. At her trial, she was convicted to 18 months hard labour (harsh in today's terms but theft was a very serious crime in the 19th century).; Attached To Sarah TOMLINSON b. 23 Mar 1812 d. 1898, Other Event

372. (Research):Miriam was christened (daughter of Frederick & Eliza Freer) the same day as her cousin Pharoah Watts in Quorndon. Miriam was listed as Miriam Watts (not Freer) when staying with her grandfather John Watts in 1841. The 1841 census shows she was born 1826 (so baptised aged 10), two years before her parents marriage in 1828. Miriam's marriage certificate to WIlliam Cramp in 1846 shows her father's name as Frederick Freer. Miriam's maiden name in Charles Cramp's birth certificate is Watts not Freer. Conclusion is that Miriam was Miriam Watts (illegitimate daughter of Frederick Freer, her father, and Eliza Watts, her mother).; [Note Record]; Attached To Miriam WATTS b.
